Zorro on Screen: One Mask, Several Generations
The story of Zorro began in 1919, penned by American writer Johnston McCulley. Behind the mask lies Don Diego de la Vega, who secretly assumes the identity of Zorro to defend the oppressed and fight against injustice.
From the page to the big screen, the hero went on to span the ages and take on many different faces:
- 1920 – Douglas Fairbanks: He portrayed one of the first Zorro characters on film in *The Mark of Zorro*.
- 1940 – Tyrone Power: He donned the mask and helped establish Zorro as one of the great figures of adventure cinema.
- Late 1950s – Guy Williams: The famous Zorro series produced by Disney left its mark on an entire generation.
- 1975 – Alain Delon: The vigilante took on a French accent in a new adaptation.
- 1998 – Antonio Banderas: *The Mask of Zorro* breathed new life into the legend. The actor reprised the role in 2005.
- 2024 – Jean Dujardin: More than a century after the character’s creation, he, in turn, becomes Don Diego de la Vega in a new series.

Today, the brand is managed by Zorro Productions, Inc. (ZPI), based in Berkeley, California. The company manages the brands and various rights associated with Zorro’s name, character, and identity.
Its president, John Gertz, has been involved in the brand’s development for over fifty years. Zorro Productions also reports that it works with more than 35 licensing agents worldwide.

The challenge was to make the famous vigilante instantly recognizable without simply replicating his most famous attributes.
Conceived and designed by our teams, the collection brings together costumes, hats, masks, swords, and whips within a universe where the character’s iconic black meets gold accents and intricate patterns specially selected for this collection.

From iconic black to gold accents
Creating a collection centered on Zorro almost naturally calls for starting with black.
This color has been associated with the character since his earliest portrayals and contributes to his air of mystery. It therefore remains at the heart of the Zorro costumes in the new line.
For this collection, the decision was made to play on contrast with gold accents.
These accents highlight the patterns and certain details of the costume without detracting from the understated elegance of the iconic black.
Rather than using a single, uniform color, the patterns and accents draw the eye to specific parts of the outfit and offer a fresh take on the character’s silhouette.
The letter “Z” fits naturally into this design and immediately reminds us of the world to which the collection belongs.
